How does a British girl pick up an American accent in the USA?

December 29, 2009 | 4 Comments

I’ve recently moved to northern California from England and after being here for a while I feel I need to make a concerted effort to ‘pick up’ the accent. I had no interest in losing my accent before and assumed people would understand me as we spoke the same language…..but they don’t. I constantly get asked to repeat things and people say I speak way too fast. I was also very surprised to discover that people don’t say things like queue and lift as I’d assumed they were universal words.I don’t think british people have a very good reputation here either and I’d rather try to fit in. So I’ve decided to try to pick up the local lingo but the question is, how? Any answers would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I dont think that you should expect to lose your accept within weeks, it will take months maybe even a year. American English emphazizes on rolling the rrr sound, e.g A british lad would say he was Bri-ish with a sligh R sound and no T sound. and an American would say BrrriTTTish. Just hang out with alot of Americans, talk to them, watch american t.v shows, movies, when you on the car listen to a talk radio show and within 8 months the American accent will rub on you

How do I talk to this girl again?

December 29, 2009 | 1 Comment

I used to kind of know this girl from one of my classes 2 years ago, but I don’t talk to her anymore at all since we hang out with completely different friends and I hardly even see her in school anymore. I’ve started a conversation with her online twice..the first time we talked for a bit and the second time she said she had to go (which I believe since it was late). What should I do to start talking to her again without being awkward?

Ok, just message her and make simple conversation. Ask her how she has been and if there’s anything new going on. And from there on make plans to hang out
Hope this helps

Why is a laundromat a really bad place to pick up women?

Because a woman who can’t even afford a washing machine will never be able to support you.

not a place to meet quality people..

Has anyone actually studied to pick up girls? How did it work out?

December 29, 2009 | 2 Comments

Have any of you actually devoted time to picking up women and getting it down to a science? How did it pay off? Can you really increase your game by studying it like an art?

studying anything is help. usually you do better on any test if you study, and the same thing in real life!

I want to cook a meal to impress a girl.?

December 29, 2009 | 10 Comments

I want to impress a girl by cooking dinner for her. Anyone know any good meals? She doesn’t like red meat or pork.
Thanks,
Radchad

Shrimp Scampi over Linguine

Vegetable oil
1 tablespoon kosher salt plus 1 1/2 teaspoons
3/4 pound linguine
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 1/2 tablespoons good olive oil
1 1/2 tablespoons minced garlic (4 cloves)
1 pound large shrimp (about 16 shrimp), peeled and deveined
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/3 cup chopped fresh parsley leaves
1/2 lemon, zest grated
1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (2 lemons)
1/4 lemon, thinly sliced in half-rounds
1/8 teaspoon hot red pepper flakes

Drizzle some oil in a large pot of boiling salted water, add 1 tablespoon of salt and the linguine, and cook for 7 to 10 minutes, or according to the directions on the package.

Meanwhile, in another large (12-inch), heavy-bottomed pan, melt the butter and olive oil over medium-low heat. Add the garlic. Saute for 1 minute. Be careful, the garlic burns easily! Add the shrimp, 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt, and the pepper and saute until the shrimp have just turned pink, about 5 minutes, stirring often. Remove from the heat, add the parsley, lemon zest, lemon juice, lemon slices, and red pepper flakes. Toss to combine.

When the pasta is done, drain the cooked linguine and then put it back in the pot. Immediately add the shrimp and sauce, toss well, and serve.
